“Improvisation on a Night’s Dream”

“Improvisation on a Night’s Dream” is a collaboration between Reid Turner and artist Kasen Keller. The concept was to create a piece of music that was based upon an original piece of art. The painting was started in January 2013 and finished in late February using acrylics. The canvas of the work takes up 5 by 2.5 ft.  The work consists of 3 main sections: falling asleep, dreaming, and waking up. The second section made up the majority of the piece, being improvised directly based on the painting.

The piece was premiered at Turner’s senior recital at the University of South Dakota on March 15, 2013.
